Strictly speaking in terms of anime, a filler consists typically of comedic single episode stand-alone story arcs. They are often used in long running animes such as Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, etc. and resemble the syndicated episodes of American cartoon shows. However, the mentioned animes have been ongoing for several seasons spanning years. So, it is therefore almost atypical to catch more than two or three fillers in a 12-13 episodes-per-season anime. In this case, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Saison Deux.
The Revolution begins!!!
Anime is not your typical blend of the visual genre. Just as it has become its own visual novelty, it defies whatever there was to be defied. Haruhi defies it in an extremely artistic and extremely novel manner, to the extreme. Much to the dismay applause of many fans, a new barrier had been broken once again. This new approach consists of repeating a single episode eight times by changing characters’ outfits, dialogues, and scene progressions. But, by changing only 5% of each of the episode, the franchise can re-utilize background cells, soundtrack, and much of the voice overs as well.

It is almost brilliant how they decided to keep the same title for all of the “Endless Eight” episodes. I am going to guess that the next episode will also be called “Endless Eight,” typed in backslash diagonal. Such artistic merit cannot go unrewarded. Surely, the fans are dying to see another version of the exact same episode two more times with just as outrageous title screen. Only if they could do this for the rest of the season. One can hope.
Stay tuned for the DVD and Blu-ray releases. Since a typical Japanese anime DVD release contains two episodes per disc, I expect much revenue for Kadokawa and KyoAni.
By the way, 8/13 = 62% What’s even greater is that six out of the seven season two episodes thus far have been Endless Eight’s. Great work, guys!
